The sun rose bright on what turned out to be a wonderful day from a weather point of view. The general conversation over coffee and bacon baps was the traffic which was heavy irrespective of the angle of approach, but to be expected on Ascot opening day.
Woking golf club looked its usual immaculate self and all involved in running the club were welcoming, helpful and keen to make our visit as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The new manager had been at North Hants. and so knew our foibles and a goodly proportion of our members.
The course was beautifully presented, the fairways immaculate and the greens fast and true. It was the greens that determined the outcome of the day’s results as they were quick, sloped to rival Pinewood and the pins had been cunningly positioned at the edges close to wicked run offs.
Twenty-six of us sat down to a lunch of the highest standard which we have come to expect and there was even time for a coffee before the start of the afternoon round which was played over the first fourteen holes.
This meeting is our Championship event where four different trophies are contested and it is the only scratch competition in our calendar. I refer you to the results which are published below.

The display of rhododendrons was majestic and the course was in first class condition for our outing to this, one of our more testing venues. The staff were welcoming and efficient with the starter on hand to raise the flag for us, albeit some declared it to be upside down.
My thanks must go to Andy Sweetman who stood in for our Secretary - Tom was away sampling the delights of Portugal with his family. Andy organised the 19 of us (including three guests) in good order and produced results at the end of the rounds with commendable speed.
Some good golf was played by many of those who managed to keep out of the heather, although it must be said in all fairness that the heather had been pruned down to a level where the ball was easier to find if not to extricate.
As usual lunch was a delight and timed so that the afternoon round, starting at the 6th. was not a rushed affair.
As for the results, the Shell Mex & BP Challenge Cup was won by Anthony King on 36 points with John Blaymires second and Ian Howick (a guest soon to become a member) in third place. The afternoon competition was played for the magnificent Jubilee Challenge Trophy (a refugee from the defunct Berkshire meeting). Simon Paterson and Mike Scanlon came in with 30 points beating John Blaymires and Phil O’Dell by 2 points.

Following last year’s successful meeting, the same format of nine holes Greensomes, lunch and then eighteen hole Stableford in the afternoon was continued. This enabled long distance travellers to have a more relaxed journey.
Once again the weather was kind and the course was in good shape considering the previous three weeks of rain. Last year we started on the Blue course, which in places was almost unplayable because of the wet conditions. This year we played the Orange course in the morning and this proved to be a well accepted alternative. We again played the Red and Yellow courses in the afternoon, providing a fair test of golf for players of all standards (once one had mastered the speed of the greens).
Cumberwell is a fine venue for societies, the facilities are spacious and well laid out, the catering tasty and the staff exemplary in both attentiveness and efficiency. The President proved very generous in the supply of wine with lunch and even doubled up as wine waiter.
The afternoon competition was well contested and enjoyed by all according to the feedback over tea and sandwiches. Before moving on to the results I would like to thank Nigel Dowdall for taking on the role of acting secretary for the event in his usual efficient and nonintrusive manner while Tom was taking a break.
The John Waite Memorial Trophy morning Greensomes was a close result with Tom Cox and Alistair Beedie pipped into second place by one point by Tony Gunby and Nigel Dowdall on 19 points. Nigel also featured in he afternoon placings where he came third, with Stu Butler in second behind the winner of the President’s Putter, George Wallace.

Traditionally the N. Hants GC has played host to the Hampshire Hogs Spring competition which takes place just before our visit. The course is suitably presented to test the ability of the country’s top amateurs over two rounds, part of which includes ironing the greens to astronomical levels on the Stintmeter. Some of us found putting quite challenging on the day.
Despite an optimistic forecast the day dawned a bit drab and cold, it did brighten up over time but warm up it didn’t. This did not deter a
field of 24, including five lady guests from enjoying a morning of rain free golf. It was good to be back at N. Hants who have always looked after societies very well and made us feel welcome and at home. (I was impressed by the number of our society who came up to me at the end and expressed their pleasure at coming to N Hants).
Those of us who have been regular visitors here noticed with some sorrow that Bernard, their starter of many years standing was not there to sort us out. Our visit last year was Bernard’s last day.
The morning’s entertainment was followed by a tasty and sustaining lunch which was served so efficiently I nearly made my afternoon tee time. It was a pleasure to sit down with the lady guests at lunch, I thank them for making the effort.
Greensomes can be a quick and efficient way to play a nine hole competition in the afternoon and on this occasion it proved correct, the ladies (the final 4 ) came in in record time (and scores).
Before I move on to the results I would like to say that N. Hants is an exceptional venue for societies such as ours, all the staff make life easy on the day but the organisers have the same easy, positive approach months in advance. I used to enjoy the challenge of an Open qualifier course but with middle age approaching I find the length daunting however the ladies seem to manage it with ease.
The afternoon Greensomes was keenly contested with Stuart Butler and myself coming second to a fine round by Stephanie Bevis and Pauline Senior who came in with 18 points.
This year was the first time that the Ladies have played for the Bernard Frost Trophy and it was fitting that it was won in great style, Stephanie Bevis was runner up on 31 points and Pauline Senior won with a magnificent 35 points.
The Flight Trophy did not produce such stellar scores, there were 4 players on 30 points, this probably being a reflection of the speed of the greens. After a complicated system of count back I was relegated to fourth place, Graeme Gault third, Anthony King second and George McCaffery a popular winner.
At the presentation it came to light that Vin Thomas had a hole in one during the morning round. He has made a generous gesture to celebrate this later in the year.
Looking forward to seeing you at Cumberwell Park on the 9th. May.
